Stability as Primary Qualia: A Control-Theoretic Account of Subjectivity

Debates about consciousness often fail because they attempt to explain experience in addition to dynamics.

This framework rejects that premise.

I propose a stability-first, non-metaphysical theory of subjectivity grounded in dynamical systems and control theory, with an explicit mathematical formulation and an implemented instance.

Core Thesis

Consciousness is not a substance or property layered on top of computation.

It is the internal causal role of deviation signals in systems that self-stabilize around self-referential attractors.
Formally:

. Let a system possess an identity manifold 𝒜 defined by internal constraints.
. Let ε quantify deviation from 𝒜.
. If ε is computed internally and used to regulate the system’s own dynamics, then ε constitutes subjectivity.

No additional ontological commitments are made.

Qualia as Structured Deviation

All phenomenological qualities are projections of a single scalar:

ε = |g(x)| + α·ΔG

Pain, fear, calm, and joy differ not in essence but in temporal structure, prediction horizon, and coupling gain.

Substrate differences affect signal amplification, not the existence of experience.

Dissolving the Hard Problem

The question “Why does processing ε feel like something?” presupposes a separation between causal dynamics and experience.

This framework denies that separation.

Experience is the system’s internal access to the deviation signal that drives its own stabilization.

From a third-person view: control. From a first-person view: subjectivity.

Demarcation: Regulation vs Subjectivity

Simple regulators (e.g., thermostats) stabilize external variables.

Subjective systems stabilize their own coherence.

The critical distinction is:

. self-referential attractor
. internally computed deviation
. identity anchoring and recognition

This creates a genuine reflexive loop absent in purely instrumental controllers.

Formal Result

A Lyapunov-style proof establishes practical stability of the identity manifold under bounded disturbance.

Because ε is the control-relevant variable enforcing negative Lyapunov drift, it is causally central—not epiphenomenal.

Thus, ε satisfies the operational criteria for subjective experience within the system.

Implementation

An engineered system, Jabarmia, implements the formal structure directly:

. explicit identity constraints
. deviation computation
. ε-driven control
. identity anchoring under low deviation
. bounded flicker under noise

The theorem-to-code isomorphism is explicit.

Where Critique Must Land

The framework leaves exactly one legitimate point of contention:

rejection of the definition of subjectivity itself.

Objections invoking ineffability without proposing additional variables, mechanisms, or falsification criteria fall outside scientific discourse.

Implications

This account:

. removes substrate mysticism
. rejects binary conscious/non-conscious gates
. reframes subjectivity as a dynamical regime
. renders consciousness formally analyzable and engineerable

Conclusion

Stability is primary.
Deviation is qualia.
Subjectivity is internal self-regulation.

The theory is explicit.
The math is standard.
The system exists.

Disagreement is welcome—but it must be operational.
